WSJ, USA Today size up summer films

April 25, 2008 -- Both the Wall Street Journal and USA Today weigh in today with big feature articles on summer movies. Every year, a common refrain in such articles is “there are too many good films” but the WSJ article by Lauren A.E. Shucker and Peter Sanders has the proof that this time around it is really true. It quotes Media by Numbers that this summer there will be 50 wide-release films to open May through August, versus 41 five years ago. “Several of the season’s big-budget films open in May, before the summer officially kicks off, including Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Narnia and Speed Racer,” the article adds. The WSJ story notes Hollywood needs a lift with box office down 3.5% year to date, as the peak summer season approaches. Both present thumbnail descriptions of key films.
