'Thunder' Ripped By Disabilties Groups
Aug. 12, 2008 – Hollywood parody Tropic Thunder is target of a boycott for allegedly denigrating persons with mental disabilities. Humor on that topic involves a washed up Hollywood actor who made a bomb film in which he portrayed a retarded person.
A New York Times article notes that “DreamWorks amended some marketing materials in response to complaints and removed a Web site that contained the tag line ‘Once there was a retard,’ but it declined to change the film.”
The film’s parody of Hollywood is most savage by not sparing any segment, like other films that would make writers or some other class heroic. The offending passages can be interpreted as the filmmakers spoofing earnest social dramas.
Its distributor is Paramount Pictures and the film has received rave reviews.
