SPC Tries Texas Launch for 'Baghead'
June 3, 2008 – Sony Pictures Classics will premiere comic thriller Baghead in Austin, TX, hoping that will ignite a buzz among indie film aficionados that carries the film elsewhere, according to a New York Times article.
“Professional reviews and expensive advertising in the national media centers matter less,” notes the article by Michael Cieply. “Internet buzz and the folkways of a flourishing festival culture now count for more.”
Austin is a college town and SPC notes audiences are well informed about films because of the Internet. After its Austin run, “Baghead will probably move on to Dallas, Houston or, maybe, Portland, Ore. — cities that, in the words of Tom Bernard, the co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, ‘tend to connect with what’s new and different.’”
If all is successful, the film will make New York City and Los Angeles in late July or August.
