'Rider' Mounts Poster Contest
By Robert Marich
Oct 21, 2011-Sony Pictures is making professional looking movie elements available to moviegoers in its contest to create a one-sheet poster for Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance. That's the PG-13 fantasy horror drama starring Nicolas Cage that is set scheduled for premiere Feb. 17, 2012. It’s a sequel to an earlier Ghost Rider film from 2007 that grossed $115.8 million.
The Create A Movie Poster contest runs until Jan. 4 and is different than luck-of-the-draw sweepstakes because submitted Ghost Rider posters will be judged. “One Grand Prize winner will receive a trip for two to the premiere of the film and the potential to have the winning poster featured in select movie theaters during the marketing campaign of the movie. Up to 10 Finalists each receive a $300 SonyStyle gift card,” says a Sony Pictures press release.
Film marketers feel that moviegoers who manipulate content will develop a deep affinity. The thinking is a small group of engaged consumers will create a buzz. A majority of consumers probably won’t invest the time or have the computer saavy to enter the contest, but a dedicated small force is sufficient. The contest goes on for two and a half months—which is lotsa time to rope in participants. The prizes are modest, so that’s not going to be a big catalyst to enter
I downloaded elements and it was easy, though I had to do it twice. The first time, moving the Ghost Rider element’s zip files to a different folder on my computer made the elements—JPEGs and other files-- inoperable. But when I did a Save As to the final destination folder—and didn’t move it—the zip file worked fine.

I also noticed the press release was picked up by a lot of movie websites.
