Local-interest Films Nab Cinema Screenings
By Robert Marich
Aug. 31, 2011-Action film Born to Ride is latching on to a big motorcycle rally in Milwaukee—home of the Harley Davidson motorcycle factory—to make a dent in cinema screens. The producer of the independent film is renting a Marcus Theatres Ridge Cinemas screen in New Berlin, Wisc. on Saturday for one paid showing, after a one-run screening several weeks earlier.
Born to Ride stars Casper Van Dien, William Forsythe, Branscombe Richmond, Patrick Muldoon and Theresa Russell—who are all actors with credits--in the tale of two bikers who bring down a corrupt politician, after some entertaining screen mayhem.
Leveraging promotional opportunities, producer/writer Mike Anthony Jones is mounting publicity stops at motorcycle dealers during the Milwaukee Rally this weekend, which draws hundreds of thousands of persons. The law firm of Hupy and Abraham is also mounting promotions.
Marcus is considering booking the film for cinema runs. The Milwaukee-based circuit ,which owns 684 screens in seven Midwestern states, books regional films with local interest, giving them limited theatrical release. For example in 2010, Marcus booked midlife crisis comedy Feed the Fish, which stars TV actor Tony Shalhoub, on some Wisconsin screens. The star of TV’s Monk series is from Green Bay, Wisc., and the film takes place in small town Wisconsin. Another film getting local runs was Lovely, Still that is set in Omaha, Nebraska, and stars Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn.
