In A Reversal, 'Trek' Betters 'Angels'
By Robert Marich
May 21, 2009 – Angels and Demons is heralded as the top-grossing film from the weekend, when it premiered, but that’s not clear-cut and as the days go on holdover Star Trek is emerging as the week’s top film.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, com, the two films are posting these box office figures. Sony Pictures’ Angels grossed $46.2 million over the three day weekend vs. $43.0 million for Paramount’s Star Trek. But Star Trek was tops for two of three days of that weekend. Angels won the three-day weekend entirely on the strength of its Friday gross of $16.5 million, bettering the Star Trek’s $11.8 million. Star Trek eked out narrow wins on Saturday and Sunday.
Angels now seems settling into second position as days go on, which doesn’t bode well for its box office starying power (reviews were mixed, calling its plot too dense).
By Wednesday, Star Trek – which premiered a week earlier – won the day with a one-day gross of $3.1 million, vs. $2.9 million for Angels. Trek also took Tuesday though on Monday Angels won the day.
