'Dirty Dancing' Facebook Revival
Sept 13, 2011—The 1987 indie classic Dirty Dancing—an innocent coming-of-age youth drama—claims to be the ninth most popular movie franchise on Facebook with 10.9 million fans and today unveiled a Facebook social game. It helps keep the property popular as a remake is planned for 2013.
Despite suggestions of its name, Dirty Dancing is a sweet romance about a naïve young woman swept up in life away from home during the summer at the Kellerman resort in the Catskills outside of New York City. The $6 million film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey boasted impressive dancing and a memorable soundtrack album that includes “The Time of Our Lives.” A 2004 sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights was a box office disappointment.
A press release says the game allows users “build the resort, provide guests with fun activities and dances, spread romance and enjoy music from the classic Dirty Dancing soundtrack.” The game was developed by Toronto-based Social Game Universe.
“Dirty Dancing remains one of the most popular films in Lionsgate’s 13,000-title library, having sold more than 10 million units on DVD, and is one of the most enduring modern classics in feature film and home entertainment history,” says the film comp any. “Lionsgate recently announced plans for a remake of the film (for 2013 release), to be directed by the original choreographer, Kenny Ortega.”
Marketing to Moviegoers: Second edition notes film companies increasingly license rights to older movies for profit and to keep the properties in the public eye. The Pink Panther and American Graffiti are movies given a big push over the years.
