Depp Tops Harris' Star Popularity

Jan. 20, 2012-Johnny Depp is America’s favorite actor for the second year in a row and Sandra Bullock is the only female in a list of top 10 film stars, as compiled by the Harris Poll.
Here are some other tidbits about the Hollywood star power list:
·         Some veterans rank high: Clint Eastwood is #2, the late John Wayne #5 and Harrison Ford #8. Eastwood and Wayne are the only stars to make the Harris top 10 every year since 2001.
·         Tom Hanks survives insipid romantic comedy Larry Crowne—which was a box office bomb despite his star wattage and that of co-star Bullock—by moving up one spot to #4.
·         Denzel Washington at #3 is the only person of color in the top 10.
·         Angelina Jolie, who was #5 last year, did not make the top 10; she directed a searing drama film about the Bosnian war that got mixed reviews and criticism of its view that seems to be a pedestrian.
Harris broke out rankings by various subgroups including U.S. regions, age, gender and political leanings of respondents in measuring star power.
“Those who live in the East, Midwest and West all say Johnny Depp is their favorite while for Southerners, their favorite is Clint Eastwood,” the press release says. “Johnny Depp is also the favorite actor for both Republicans and Independents, but Democrats say Denzel Washington is their favorite actor. There is finally something that Liberals and Conservatives agree on – Johnny Depp is their favorite actor; however, for Moderates, it is Denzel Washington.”
Such actor popularity lists are issued from time to time by dubious organizations though Harris Interactive is a leading researcher of the consumer market. But Harris Interactive doesn’t have much presence in Hollywood. The Harris poll in December tabulates responses from 2,237 adults.
