Dark Films Land In Gloomy Times

Nov. 11, 2008 – A Business Week article speculates that audiences won't respond to the stream of bleak, dark films hitting screens because of the declining economy, but Oscar voters will still love depressing fare.
“With gloom and doom in the real-world economy,” says the article by David Germain, “will moviegoers be even more reluctant to catch dark, dreary Oscar heavyweights and head instead for the happy place that a Beverly Hills Chihuahua can take them?"
There are plenty of gloomy films in the marketplace or coming soon: gay assassination drama Milk starring Sean Penn, Frost/Nixon, failed marriage drama Revolutionary Road, racism essay Gran Torino and child abuse drama Doubt.
“Yet studio executives expect this Oscar season to play out like any other, with the cream of the awards contenders finding a respectable box-office niche among the just-for-fun flicks,” notes the article.
