Burger King's modest tie to 'Cloudy...Meatballs'

Sept. 18, 2009 – Burger King mounts a tie-in promotion to Sony Pictures’ animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which opens today on a wide 3,119 screens domestically. The PG-rated cartoon feature is basic kids fare.

“Visitors to the updated ClubBK.com can kick back and watch the official movie trailer at the new virtual Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs-themed theatre, as well as find a link to the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs online ‘Food Catcher’ game,” says a Burger King press release.  “Through game play, kids will earn codes that can be redeemed back at Club BKSM for Crowns, which is the virtual currency for Club BKSM.”

The Burger King tie-in is Spartan. The movie’s footprint on the ClubBK website is minor. As Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition reports, fast-foot restaurant chains have cooled to movies over the years because of uneven results. Also, public interest groups knock kid tie-ins when films are rated PG-13, or even PG. Finally, movies increasingly vie against video games and TV shows for coveted partnership opportunities.
