Bratz vid games lag theatrical
Note from author Robert Marich. The press release below ties into a movie, but it gets a little confusing. THQ's video game Bratz: 4 Real is directly linked to a theatrical film, which premiered on 1,509 U.S. cinema screens Aug. 3 and finished an abbreviated theatrical run with a modest $9.7 million in U.S. box office for distributor Lionsgate. Video games based on the live-action theatrical simply titled Bratz will come out later this year in the PC Windows and Nintendo DS formats, as stated at the bottom of the following press release. Meanwhile, the games for Bratz: The Movie, which is actually a line of doll toys, are coming out first but these are not directly tied to the Aug.3 theatrical movie (I warned this would get confusing!).
In general video games have a gestation period of a year or more to make, so having the game release simultaneous with theatrical premiere is frequently not possible. Simultaneous is always the goal to achieve cross promotion to support the theatrical release that is crucial in establishing consumer value for the same property in other windows. These games can, however, come out in time to support video releases of the movies.
