Blu-ray Players Get Streamed Trailers
By Robert Marich
April 28, 2010-Web-connected Blu-ray DVD players are serving up live streams of millions of film trailers promoting DVDs and theatricals run of movies, according to Deluxe Digital Studios, which is a major services vender to Hollywood studios. The video streaming service substitutes current and relevant film trailers when web-connected Blu-ray players play film previews on a DVD.
“This innovative feature allows us to reach the Blu-ray consumer in ways that are not possible with DVD,” Robert Read, Vice President, HD Strategic Marketing, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, said in a Deluxe press release on the initiative. “By utilizing the BD-Live capability, consumers can now enjoy the latest theatrical and home entertainment trailers every time they play a Universal Blu-ray release, even on discs they purchased over a year ago.”
Deluxe says this utilizes its BD-Live Trailer Pre-Roll technology.
“The Burbank, Calif.-based DVD compression and authoring company said its nascent pre-roll technology has already streamed 8 million theatrical trailers via BD-Live, the Internet-enabled component of the high-definition packaged media format,” according to an article in trade publication Home Media Magazine. The goal is to bring its running total to 25 million theatrical trailers streamed to homes by end year.
DVD trailers are revised from theatrical for the same movie because they can include quotes from film critics that were published too late for the theatrical campaign. Also, the marketing focus can shift from theatrical. For example, the marketing for animated children’s films target kids in theatrical, but then for later DVD the emphasis shifts to mothers, who would buy a DVD at grocery or big-box retailer like Wal-Mart.
