'Avatar' Tunes In 'Titanic' Magic
Nov. 18, 2009 – Will the movie soundtrack for highly-anticipated Avatar capture some Titanic’s musical magic?
20th Century Fox – distributor of both films – hopes so with Avatar’s soundtrack sporting some of the same musical talent.
“The album, which features music composed and conducted by Academy Award®-winner James Horner (Titanic), will be highlighted by the film’s end title song, ‘I See You,’ performed by multiple Grammy Award-nominated singer Leona Lewis, and produced by James Horner and Simon Franglen, the team behind Titanic’s blockbuster theme song, ‘My Heart Will Go On,’” says a press release from Atlantic Records. “A companion video directed by Jake Nava (Beyoncé, Shakira) is currently in production.”
Sci-fi yarn Avatar, which is scheduled for Dec. 18 theatrical premiere, is from Titanic creative force Jim Cameron.
Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition notes that sales of film soundtracks have fallen from a peak in the 1980s-1990s. Increasingly, soundtracks pluck existing hit songs. The biggest sales in movie history are for soundtracks with original scores that become hits.
“Historically, music was one of the most financially important merchandise categories and is still an integral part of marketing efforts to support theatrical release,” notes Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition. “But it has been surpassed by video games."
The not-yet-rated Avatar reportedly cost $200 million to make, versus Marketing to Moviegoers: Second Edition’s estimate of $235 million for Titanic.
